Google Adsense has been a great way for internet marketers to monetize websites. For those seeking an alternative to Adsense, there is a great casestudy on Adsense and Yahoo’s version called Yahoo Publisher Network (or YPN for short) here.
The case study examines several factors including overall earnings, clickthrough rates, eCPM, earnings per click, actual clicks and relevancy. In summary, Adsense wins by a small margin. With time and some tweaking, however, Yahoo’s service will be just as good if not better than Google’s.
Some improvements have already been implemented. Based on feedback, Yahoo made their ad font smaller while adding another ad as seen here. This will likely help to increase clickthrough rates as this matches much more with Google’s ads. It also added ad category targeting and will help increase relevancy issues as well.
